The forest is full of ancient monuments. 55 burial mounds and dolmens help give Kongsøre Forest a touch of romance. It is said that King Øre is buried here.
Countess Forest
- Grevinge Skov is worth a nice bike ride. Take the trip over the dam and follow the hills up to the right – you can see the campsite on the horizon before you enter the forest.
- Grevinge Forest is a deciduous forest in a beautiful hilly terrain down to the dammed Sidinge Fjord. The forest is packed with ancient monuments from the Stone Age. Here you can find Hamlet's Grave and see where the Germans had an emergency airfield during the occupation. Today it is a lovely and peaceful forest where you can take a quiet walk and get close to both nature and the past.
Stokkebjerg forest
It is a very cozy forest, with a wonderful story about the pocket stone, which is definitely worth a visit.
- Out in the water by the beach in Stokkebjerg Forest lies the Pocket Stone, said to be the largest stone in Odsherred. It is a so-called wandering block that was carried with the ice from Sweden during the last ice age. However, old tradition would have it that it was an angry troll who threw the stone at the church bells in Egebjerg Church. Most people know that church bells can make even the biggest troll cry. And it is said that it was the giant Lumb from Lumsås who threw the stone to put an end to the infernal germ.
- Others believe that it was the troll from Hornsherred on the other side of the Isefjord who had set his sights on Egebjerg Church. Every day he went and collected stones, which he put in his pocket. One day he found a particularly large one, and when the hated church bells from Egebjerg began to ring, he threw it with all his might towards the church tower. But he aimed too low. The stone hit a tree in Stokkebjerg Forest and fell into the water, where it still lies.
Ulkerup Forest and Annebjerg Forest
If you continue towards Nykøbing on the old road, you will reach Ulkerup and Annebjerg Skov.
- Ulkerup Skov and Annebjerg Skov are connected by Ulkerup Overdrev and today form one large natural area of approximately 500 hectares. You can go on an experience in the old village, which had disappeared for over 200 years, and you can see the oldest tree in the forest – the 400-500 year old Teglværk oak, which almost ended up at the bottom of the Skagerak.
- Ulkerup village, is still on display. Inside the area, you can see a miniature of the village as it once looked in an exhibition house. You can see a model of Niels Jenssøns Gård. And you can get an impression of what life in Ulkerup was like. If you walk around the area, you can clearly see the foundations. You can also see the doorstep and "go inside" the old farms.
- Near the village, you will pass places with the Ulkerup souls. Beautiful works of art. Already in the Middle Ages, myths and mystery were associated with the "forest people", and when Ulkerup village was closed down, the mystery was reinforced. Some claimed that they had experienced "soul meetings", where the souls of the restless Ulkerup farmers met in the forest. Now the Ulkerup farmers have returned in the form of seven and most recently two more Ulkerup souls, who stand on the outskirts of the village and hold council. It is the architect and artist Per Pandrup who created the 1,2 meter high souls dressed in robes in dark ceramic stoneware. The first seven souls were set up in 2010, and later two more souls were added. They stand a little away from the others. It is said that you can clearly hear the Ulkerup souls whispering together when you pass them at dusk – and at night the figures come alive to visit their former homes in the forest.
